How It Works: The Root Canal Process

Image

Consultation

In order to determine if a root canal is still possible, Dr. Mike Tran will examine your teeth and take digital x-rays.
Image

Local Anesthesia

We will administer a local anesthetic to make the procedure painless.
Image

Pulpectomy

A dental drill will be used to create an access hole into the tooth to allow access to the pulp chamber. Special tools will be used to scrape out the dental pulp and the roots of the tooth.

Cleaning the Canals

The canals in the tooth will be thoroughly cleaned and reshaped.

Filling

A gutta-percha filling will replace the tooth's missing pulp.

Dental Crown

The access hole will be sealed with a permanent filling and a crown may also be placed over the tooth.

Root Canal Options

Anterior

It is less common to perform anterior root canals on front teeth, but these thinner teeth have fewer canals and require a different approach to root canals. In order to gain access to the pulp chamber, we must first make an access hole on the back of the tooth, since the chewing surfaces of the teeth don't have enough room.

Infected pulp and roots are removed, and the canals are cleaned. Since front teeth do not have many canals, a permanent filling is usually all that is needed rather than a crown since they are not used for chewing.

If the infection has progressed too far through the tooth, a root canal may no longer be suitable and the tooth may need to be extracted.
