What to expect at your oral surgery appointment in Magnolia

Image

Consultation

You will likely be referred to an oral surgeon for a consultation if Dr. Mike Tran suspects that you could benefit from oral surgery, or if you require oral surgery to prepare for a related treatment.
Image

Treatment Planning

Dr. Mike Tran or your oral surgeon will create a treatment plan that is tailored to your unique needs, and take the time to educate you about the treatment and the surgical procedure that will be performed. On the day of the procedure, you will be informed of what to expect and how to prepare.

Sedation Options

It is common for oral surgeons to use all types of sedation, especially IV sedation and general anesthesia, depending on the procedure and your unique needs.

Day of Surgery

You will need someone to drive you to and from your oral surgery on the day of your procedure. Specific recommendations will be provided based on the procedure being performed, however you should plan to take a day off and have someone with you to monitor your health the rest of the day.

Healing & Aftercare

After surgery, you can expect to heal for at least a few days, depending on the extent of the procedure. For the next 24-72 hours, you may experience swelling and discomfort, as well as light bleeding. Keep your head elevated and use a cold compress to reduce swelling. You should take any medications prescribed by your doctor for the first 48 hours after surgery, and stick to soft foods and room temperature beverages.

Common Oral Surgeries

Extractions

Extractions are frequently used when damage to teeth cannot be repaired by less invasive means. This harm can come from oral injuries, gum disease, or tooth decay, and sometimes it is necessary in order to move ahead with restorative treatments like dentures or implants. When an entire arch of teeth needs to be replaced, all the original teeth will need to be removed. Extractions may differ in complexity but generally fall under the umbrella of oral surgery.
